Our custodial foreperson at Brent Elementary school, Mary Young, has been diagnosed with cancer and will officially retire from Brent in June with almost 30 years of service. Ms. Young has been out due to aggressive treatment of her condition. We as a community want to help her during this challenging time, so we have started a GoFund Me campaign. Please consider supporting Ms. Young!
This afternoon the DC Council passed a budget that included $10 million dollars in FY19 for Brent to build out a six classroom expansion. A big thank you to all of you who called, emailed, visited, testified and signed the petition. This would not have happened without your continued involvement.
Let us all take a moment to reflect and celebrate this terrific news for Brent. Please take time to thank Councilmember Phil Mendelson, as he was instrumental in finding the funds on short notice and getting them into the budget. We should also thank Charles Allen for his dedicated and continued advocacy on the Council on behalf of our school community. In addition, please take a moment to thank Elissa Silverman and David Grosso for their support.
If you are on Twitter, a public support of thanks also goes a long way.
During last week’s PTA general meeting, the PTA along with Ms. Lycknell detailed how they worked together to develop next year’s PTA budget. This budget, along with the school’s DCPS budget, will work in concert to support the needs of the school and its students during the 2018-19 school year. This proposed budget can be found here and will be approved during the May PTA General Meeting.
Please consider donating any extra vases you may have to Brent’s teacher appreciation week. Vases can be dropped off to the front office by May 18. Thanks in advance.
