So get your credit cards and checkbooks ready! Ask your employer if they will match your contribution. If you want to help out with the drive, send Annual Fund CoChairs Cara Spaccarelli, Christy Leavitt, and Kevin Reger an email at BrentAnnualFund@gmail.com or find us on the playground. Welcome to the new brentelementary.org! We hope you will find the new site easy to navigate, informative and visually appealing. The new site will also work well on mobile devices, so feel free to check out your class page, read the latest announcements or shop the Brent store from your phone or tablet. Please take a look around and let us know what you think, what you'd like to see or what's missing.
At the September 14 PTA meeting Principal Young walked through recently released PARCC data but also the other in-house assessments used by Brent. If you weren’t able to attend or want to reference the slides, you can view or download here. Thanks to all who attended and mark your calendar for the next meeting on Wednesday, October 12.
Over the last few years Brent’s performing arts program has been very fortunate to have students perform for WWII and Vietnam War veterans at Reagan National Airport thanks to a partnership with Delta Airlines. Brent Elementary has been invited back to perform again for more of our WWII and Vietnam veterans on September 20, 2016 at 10:15 AM. I am looking for 3rd-5th grade students who have a love of singing and would like to honor our nation’s veterans by singing American patriotic songs at Reagan National Airport. I will be rehearsing students on Friday mornings from 8:00 AM – 8:35 AM. If your child is interested in performing for this amazing and emotional experience please let Mr. Krohn know as soon as possible since the first rehearsal has already taken place…
Brent profiles new 2nd grade teacher Lauren Swissman. “For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be an elementary school teacher. I always loved school and had a passion for learning and education.” ![]() What is your teaching and educational background? For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be an elementary school teacher. I always loved school and had a passion for learning and education. At the University of Maryland, I earned Bachelor’s degrees in psychology and elementary education and taught fourth grade in Prince George’s County. Throughout college, I was active with America Reads in providing books and literacy tutoring. I followed this path past graduation where I continued to teach in Arlington County Public Schools. My four years of teaching there flew by! I taught two years of 2nd grade and two years of 3rd grade. During my fourth year in Arlington, I helped to pilot a 1:1 iPad program and became active in ways that technology can transform learning. These experiences, combined with my love of learning, brought me to Teachers College, Columbia University this past year where I worked towards my Master’s in Educational Technology. While completing my Master’s, I had the opportunity to supervise new teachers in the Elementary Education program. Please join us this Sunday, September 11 from 11-2 at X Park for a day of fun, food and entertainment to welcome all families to the Brent community. There will also be a used children’s book sale, a bake sale and a chance to stock up on items from the Brent store at the picnic. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 day of. All proceeds benefit the Brent PTA. If a family needs complimentary tickets, please email Denise Diggs. We could still use a few volunteers, if you can spare 30 or 60 minutes of your time to help out.
Please visit the family picnic page for more information about the event, to sign-up to contribute to the bake sale or to volunteer. You can still gather up your used and no-longer-needed children’s and young reader books and bring them to school until Friday, September 9 – collection boxes are located at the front entrance and on the stage in the multipurpose room. Food will be available for purchase or you are welcome to bring your own picnic food. Library Lovers Club starts the week of September 26. 1st and 2nd grade students are invited to join the Library Lovers Club every Monday or Wednesday afternoon from 3:30 to 4:15 pm. Two clubs are offered to accommodate the high demand. Each group will read and talk about books; we will also explore our library catalog and resources that the Public Library system has to offer. To sign up please contact Ms. Bettina; please indicate whether your child(ren) want to attend the Monday or the Wednesday club.
