SPANISH TEACHER: JENNIFER MARCHESE
Originally from Colorado, I have been in the DC area for two years. Lover of language and culture, I am so grateful to have lived overseas for many years. My first overseas experience was during my junior year while studying at Regis University in Colorado. I went to Buenos Aires, Argentina to first become fluent in Spanish. I loved visiting neighboring countries like Brazil, Uruguay and Bolivia. After graduating from Regis with my bachelor’s degree in Spanish and Sociology, I went to live in Mexico for one year. I lived in a city called Querétaro which is in central Mexico. I had the chance to learn traditional customs practiced in schools and the community. In addition, the area in which I lived had very few Americans which forced me to constantly use and improve my Spanish language skills.
Upon returning to the United States and getting my elementary teaching certification, I began working with native Spanish speaking students who had newly arrived to the US. Several years of teaching fourth grade (reading, writing, and math in Spanish), I started focusing on younger children and literacy/language acquisition. Again, leaving the United States, I spent 3.5 years living in the Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates teaching second grade. This time, I was focusing on English language acquisition with children whose native language was Arabic. Although I am not fluent in Arabic, I enjoyed learning many words and phrases and comparing it to Spanish. Surprisingly, there are many words in Spanish and Arabic that are similar! I very much enjoyed learning about Emirate culture as well as getting the opportunity to have such close access to so many countries. I had the chance to travel throughout the Middle East, Asia, and Europe.
I am currently in my third year teaching Spanish at Brent Elementary School. Since arriving in Washington D.C., I have been working on my master’s degree from George Washington University. I am very excited to see many returning faces as well as meet many new faces at Brent this school year. I can’t wait to work with all of the kids and very much lookforward to seeing them make MORE progress.
