This year will be my seventeenth year of teaching with the majority of those years spent at the elementary level.  I spent some time teaching high school as well as college and found that singing, dancing, playing instruments with young children, and getting to be a bit sillier made me a much happier music teacher.  I celebrated my five year anniversary this past summer and I still feel like a newlywed.  I currently lead many professional developments for music educators throughout the Washington D.C. area as a member of the LEAP team for music as well as nationally (most recently in Texas) and was a proud executive board member of the Virginia Elementary Music Education Association.  Currently I am serving as the President of the Washington D.C. Music Educators Association under the umbrella of the National Association for Music Education.  Over the last seven years I have been nominated for D.C. Teacher of the Year five separate times, I am a proud nominee of the National LifeChanger Of The Year award for three separate years, and I have been nominated three separate times for a Grammy award in music education.  I’m also proud to have earned a Ph.D. in music education as well as National Board Teacher Certification in early/middle childhood music. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or if you would like to set up a time to talk in person about the performing arts here at Brent. Hope to see you soon!

Best Wishes,
Joshua Krohn, PhD
Director of Performing Arts at Brent Elementary School
President of the Washington D.C. Music Educators Association

The performing arts program at Brent encompasses both vocal and instrumental music instruction as well as both dance and theater instruction during the regular school day.  For the 2019-2020 school year students in grades 1st - 5th will attend music four days a week for one trimester (i.e.  class 1A for the first trimester, class 1B for the 2nd trimester, class 1C for the 3rd trimester).    Students in grades 2nd - 5th also have the opportunity to join the Brent Honors Chorus which has had numerous honors including performing for veterans at Reagan National Airport and performing the Millennium Stage at The Kennedy Center,  the Brent recorder ensemble, and an ensemble dedicated to musical theater.  The performing arts program at Brent holds more than fifteen opportunities each school year for students to perform including concerts in the winter and spring, talent shows, small instrumental/vocal recitals, a full-scale Broadway-style musical in the spring, Multi-cultural nights, and the Spring Mercado.

Interested in volunteering?  Please email   joshua.krohn@dc.gov if you are interested.  Currently I am in need of book binding, photo copying, and parent communication.
Here you will find information about Recorder Karate.  Brent musicians starting in 3rd grade begin learning the recorder through the method book "Recorder Karate".  Each "belt" can be found here as well as strategies for practicing.  I encourage any young musician to practice a minimum of 5-10 minutes daily to increase their finger dexterity, fine motor movement, music reading abilities, steady beat, and pitch recognition.   Below you will find practice tracks for your young recorder player to use in their practice.
