PRINCIPAL: PETER YOUNG
I am delighted to become part of Brent Elementary and the community. I was born and raised in McLean, VA where my parents still reside, and attended The Potomac School K-12. From there, I ventured down south to Vanderbilt University, where I was a double major in Elementary Education and Anthropology. Finally, in 2004, I was accepted into Harvard’s School Leadership program where I earned my Master’s in School Leadership with a license as a principal. My eight years of teaching fifth grade and this past year as Lafayette’s Assistant Principal have served me very well as I move forward in an effort to lead Brent. I am married with a beautiful wife Leah, who herself teaches ninth grade World History at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, VA. We are proud parents of a 20-month old girl, Gillian Blake Young, who reminds me everyday what really is most important, family.
For me, when a student leaves Brent Elementary, I want them to remember their experience. We as a school and a community are building experiences on a daily basis for our students, and in whatever way I can affect that experience, I will in a positive manner. Students may not remember what a stem and leaf plot is (do you?), or exactly everything they read, but if they leave Brent feeling self-confident and an extremely able learner, then we as a school and I as a principal have done our job.
Thanks again to the staff for their warm welcome, and to the parents, I look forward to having open, honest, productive dialogue around whatever issues may arise throughout this year and beyond. Finally, to the students, who are why the Brent staff comes to school every day, I look forward to many positive, personal interactions during the school year.
