FIRST GRADE-LEAD TEACHER: SARA YOKUM
Sara Yokum is thrilled to be teaching first grade again this year at Brent! This will be her twelfth year as an educator! She began her teaching career in Tampa, Florida where she taught third grade for two years. Then she and her husband moved to Tucson, Arizona where Ms. Yokum taught first grade and Special Education. This was followed up with a year of teaching first grade in her hometown of Austin, Texas and then moving to Washington D.C. and falling in love with Brent Elementary!
Ms. Yokum graduated from Birmingham-Southern College with a Collaborative Education Degree. This degree allows her to be certified in both Elementary and Special Education. After spending time in the classroom, Ms. Yokum knew that she had a passion for teaching reading. She enrolled in the Master of Reading program at the University of Arizona and received a Masters degree and her certification as a reading specialist. The same path of thinking about literacy and its impact on student’s lives drove Ms. Yokum to pursue and achieve a National Board Teaching Certificate.
Ms. Yokum currently lives with her husband David and her son Ethan. She is expecting another baby boy in the fall. Ms. Yokum also has a Golden Retrievernamed Teito and two cats named Philo and Mouse. You can usually find her kickinga soccer ball or curled up on the couch with a good book.
