Enrollment
If Brent is your in-boundary school and your child is entering K–5, enrollment is guaranteed. Other new students go through the DCPS lottery.
Who goes through the lottery
- All new early childhood education (pre-kindergarten) students, both in-boundary and out-of-boundary.
- New, out-of-boundary K–5th grade students.
Your in-boundary school is based on your home address. Check your address with DCPS.
Lottery preferences
Students qualify for this preference if both conditions apply:
- They live more than a half-mile walking distance from their DCPS in-boundary elementary school.
- They live a half-mile or less walking distance from Brent.
The lottery year
December
The lottery opens for the upcoming school year at myschooldc.org.
Early March
Applications are due.
Late March
Lottery results are available before enrollment begins.

Enrollment runs. Placed students file the yearly paperwork below.

Reenrollment
Every new and returning Brent student completes enrollment paperwork each year. DCPS enrollment typically runs from late March through April; DCPS and Brent's main office share current deadlines and instructions.
Sign in to the ASPEN family portal
Complete enrollment in the ASPEN family portal. Returning families should check access early; new families need an account. For access or password help, contact the Brent main office or email enroll@k12.dc.gov. Paper forms are available from DCPS and may be returned to the main office.
Prove residency
All students must provide proof of residency as part of the application. The accepted-documents form is below. Upload your documents as part of the online application. The caregiver on the proof of residency documents must be the same caregiver who submits the application.
Prove age, if new to DCPS
Students new to DCPS must also submit one proof of age document — a birth certificate, hospital records, previous school records, passport, or baptismal certificate.
File health forms before the year starts
Prior to the start of the school year, all students must submit a Universal Health Certificate — including a record of required immunizations — and an Oral Health Assessment. These can be included as part of the enrollment application.
