School Opening SY22-23

Dear Brent Families,

Welcome to School Year 2022-2023! Whether you are new or returning to our community, we are grateful that you are a Brent Bear.

Our Brent summer has been full of rest, reflection, planning and development, all aimed at continuing to strengthen the community our students, faculty, and families deserve. Our team has considered recent outcomes to set social emotional and academic goals, also informed by our enduring values and operating principles. Our faculty has engaged in a wide variety of professional development based on interests and student need, most significantly launching our partnerships with the DC Reading Clinic (augmenting our commitment to and implementation of the most current science around reading development) and Kindred Communities (supporting our capacity to foster a more equitable and just community). Our operations team has reimagined and reorganized building spaces and protocols to match spaces and processes to our core purposes. In essence, we have been busy laying the foundations for growth because we are a school community that celebrates what has been accomplished and identifies the opportunities for what can and should be.

The Summer Mailing that follows is a launch point, the first of a series of communications intended to orient our families to the school year. We publish the summer mailing both electronically (on our new and evolving website) and in hard copy to the address listed on your enrollment form. In addition to this letter, the Summer Mailing includes:

Communication Protocols and Key Contacts

The most efficient paths to follow and people to contact when you have a question, idea or need.

First Term Brent Calendar

The key events for the first term, centered around events that build relationships and community. The First Term Brent Calendar is designed as a quick reference and accompanies the google calendar and monthly calendar that will be published each week in Tues News. Moving forward, printed term calendars will be sent home with report cards.

DCPS Calendar

The key system-wide dates for the year, particularly days when students are not in school.

Before and After Care Programming Information

The enrollment process for Before and After Care Programming through our provider, Innovation Learning. Enrollment space is guaranteed for all students. Enrichment class offerings will be sent after the start of the school year as that portion of the program begins in October. We carefully researched potential providers and believe that maintaining our relationship with Innovation Learning offers the best match for the capacity and flexibility our community demands. The Brent administration will work alongside a parent Care Advisory Team (CAT) to ensure Innovation Learning meets our standards for safety, programming and communication while simultaneously building an even more comprehensive vision and plan for Care structures in the coming years.

Supply and Field Trip Fees

The QR code to pay the supply and field trip fees that allow us to purchase at scale and to the particular needs of classrooms. Families who qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch are excused from these fees. Families with other financial considerations should contact norah.lycknell@k12.dc.gov. Students will not be excluded from supply or field trip access under any circumstances.

School Forms

The critical forms needed to start the year. Forms can be scanned and emailed to brentelementary@k12.dc.gov or brought to the main office before or on the first day of school.  If you have already submitted these forms or find that specific content is not applicable to your family (such as the Medical Dietary Accommodation form), you are all set.

Uniforms and Merchandise Information

The Brent uniform policy and resources for uniforms and Brent swag.

We know a new school year comes with a lot of information and find that information is best shared in stages. As such, you should anticipate the following communications via email:

If you have any questions in the meantime, please email our team at brentelementary@k12.dc.gov, call us at 202-698-3363, or stop by on weekdays between the hours of 8am-4:30pm.

In just over three weeks, we will welcome our students and families for a year of belonging, significance and joy. We can’t wait.

Sincerely,
Norah Lycknell
Principal
